Sato Wines
In 2006, Yoshiaki Sato and his wife Kyoko moved to Central Otago, where they have been crafting wines with minimal intervention. The couple gained experience working in Burgundy, the Loire, and Alsace, and continue to be mentored by Pierre Frick. Initially, they sourced fruit from organic vineyards across Central Otago, but in early 2016, they bought their own farm in the Pisa sub-region. They planted Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir, with wines from their vineyard expected around 2021-22.
Sato's wines stand out in Central Otago for their early-picked freshness and balanced fruit ripeness, leading to a softer palate and a stronger expression of time and place. In contrast to the region's often fruit-sweet, overworked, and youthful wines, Sato's creations showcase a more feminine, elegant character.
